The Miami Sex Museum has opened an exhibition called “Desire Machines,” which features a selection of Hajime Sorayama's iconic "sex robot" series of sculptures, as well as 20 previously unexhibited paintings, Hypebeast reports.
Sorayama began his pioneering journey into robotic pin-up art with inspiration from Star Wars in the 1980s. His first creation, a seductive female figure commissioned by a Japanese whiskey brand, marked the beginning of a long career creating futuristic female characters. Blurring reality and fantasy, his work combines Eastern and Western cultures, classical art and pop culture, inviting viewers to consider desire and sexuality in an increasingly digital world.
Despite the reluctance of some art institutions to accept his explicit work, Sorayama remains committed to his fearless exploration of human existence, including desire and reproduction, with venues such as the Museum of Sex, embracing humanity and all aspects of it beyond nudism. And despite the social taboos surrounding sexuality, Sorayama believes that art must confront the fundamental truths of human existence.
“Sorayama's open approach to sexual fantasy is especially relevant now—when we are all cyborgs, when the real and the virtual are almost indistinguishable, and when sex robots, AI companions and virtual celebrities are more scientific fact than fiction. Hajime Sorayama’s Desire Machines provides an opportunity to think about what sexual activity, objectification, privacy, exhibitionism, exclusivity and intimacy mean in our current digital moment,” said exhibition creator, Dr. Allison de Fresne.
